Auto Glass Tip #1
The first misconception is that all auto glass is the same. No its not. Usually, the best windshield is the one the manufacturer initially installed when the car was new. Aftermarket glass may not meet the original equipment specifications. In fact, it may not fit your car properly and have to be forced to fit your car. For example, if you lease a car, your leasing company may charge you for not having an original equipment windshield installed.

Auto Glass Tip #2
Another misconception is that the windshield really isn’t safety equipment. That’s wrong. Besides keeping the elements out, the engineers of today’s cars use the windshield to help restrain you and your family from being ejected if you’re in an accident. It is also designed to support the roof in case of a roll-over. Plus the windshield helps the airbag deploy correctly. An inproperly installed windshield could put you or your family at risk in the event of an accident.

Auto Glass Tip #3
You have to go where your insurance company tells you. That’s a misconception some people have. By law, as an insured driver, you can take your car to any auto glass shop. The insurance company cannot direct you to go to any particular shop as a condition for payment. Many insurance companies use glass networks as a means of handling their claims. You may be told to call an 800 number to submit your claim. Then they may direct you to an auto glass shop that does not adhere to the strict standards that your car maker recommends.

Auto Glass Tip #4
Here’s another tip. If you have comprehensive insurance on your car, calling around to get prices is a waste of time in most cases. The price of the windshield has already been negotiated in advance with your insurance company. If you have no coverage or a high deductible, be sure to get an estimate in advance. This will help you avoid bait and switch tactics used by some auto glass shops.
