The insurance company cannot direct you to go to any particular shop as a condition for payment. Many insurance companies use glass networks as a means of handling their claims. You may be told to call an 800 number to submit your claim. Then they may direct you to an auto glass shop that does not adhere to the strict standards that your car maker recommends.

Here’s another tip. If you have comprehensive insurance on your car, calling around to get prices is a waste of time in most cases. The price of the windshield has already been negotiated in advance with your insurance company. If you have no coverage or a high deductible, be sure to get an estimate in advance. This will help you avoid bait and switch tactics used by some auto glass shops.
